Lake Baringo Islands

Lake Baringo is a stunning and remote freshwater lake located in Kenya’s Rift Valley. It is the largest natural lake in the country and is home to a diverse array of wildlife. This includes crocodiles, hippos, and over 450 species of birds. Beyond impressive flaura and fauna, the lake also houses seven permanent islands. On the lake are Lokoros, Rongena, Parmolos, Ol Kokwe, Gibraltor, Samatian and Devil’s Islands. However, twelve smaller Baringo islands tend to disappear and reappear depending on the lake’s water levels.

Though Lake Baringo was first documented by European explorer Joseph Thompson in 1883, it had long been occupied by the Njemps who fished in the lake’s waters, tilling the land, herding cattle, goats and sheep and even collecting honey from tree trunks. It was these people that lived amongst Baringo’s islands, studying their temperaments and carving out a way of life.

Islands That Hold Their Own

Ol Kokwe is the largest of the seven islands. It is an extinct volcano that sits right in the centre of the lake dotted with hot springs and sulphur. While Ol Kokwe’s appeal lies in its geographical formation, Devil’s Island is a place of legend. Exactly as its provocative moniker suggests, it is a place where the local Njemps believed devils to reside. It is said that in the dark of night, blue flames can be spotted and howls fill the air. It is even believed that devils on the island call out the names of trespassers who find themselves near it after the sun has set. By daybreak, these signs of supernatural activity die down. For this reason, the island is considered forbidden and the local Njemps often marvel at tourists willing to risk life and limb by rock climbing on the eerie island.

Gibraltor Island is a bird’s paradise. In fact, the biggest ever Goliath heron in recorded history was found on this island. Gibraltor also boasts the largest Goliath heron population in East Africa. A minuscule green island, Samatian is where the Samatian camp is found – a reputable accommodation for tourists hoping to experience the enchanting islands of Lake Baringo.

Today, Lake Baringo is a popular destination for tourists, who come to the area to enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife, as well as to experience the unique culture and history of the area. The islands of Lake Baringo are a fascinating and unique part of Kenyan history. With its stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, Lake Baringo is an unforgettable destination.
