Did you know that during the reign of Chief Odera Akang’o, at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a special prison in Yala Town for those who refused to go to school? Ruoth Odera believed in the importance of a formal education and as such, made it mandatory for every family to send their children to school. Non-compliance with this rule resulted in a jail term in prison. Because of his dedication to learning, his legacy was honoured with the naming of the Yala campus of Moi University after him.
