Waguthi Mahugu

Over the last six years, Waguthi Mahugu has been working as a therapist and a life coach, helping individuals and organizations through difficult times.

In 2008, Kenya witnessed a tragic display of violence following the 2007 general elections. Fear gripped the land as some turned to machetes, others stones, and others unmentionable yet unforgettable atrocities. But at the time, even with the uncertainty of our country’s future and her own family’s safety, Waguthi had an idea that she intended to make happen. For her, there was a vision: those born after 2008 would only see violence in their history books.

In 2012, she started a movement called The Yellow Cacti Initiative where she hoped to bring youth of different backgrounds through a single platform to redirect their time towards peace building and constructive futures. The latter involved community meetings where those in attendance were guided towards self-improvement.

Learning from her own children, Waguthi knew well about the untapped energy within the youth that could skillfully be steered towards violence. She in turn built a community where the youth members would see each other as Kenyans, as one people – beyond the various ethnic groups and political affiliations.

Her hummingbird work didn’t stop there. She is now using her professional expertise to help people navigate this trying time.

Generally, the pandemic has had a tangible impact on people and has bred anxiety among many. Emphasis has been placed on physical health, but it is also important to maintain our mental health. Waguthi understands this better than most, and so she has come up with an initiative to help those dealing with anxiety.

The Cacti Initiative is an online support forum for Waguthi’s therapy sessions. Each session lasts between 45 minutes to one hour. She is currently looking to partner with an organization that will support her initiative, which will enable her to hold more free sessions and help more people.
