Akamba Creation Myth Carved in Stone on Nzaui Hills 

If you ever decide to embark on a hike through the rugged trails of Nzaui Hills in Makueni County, the trek to the summit is not just about appreciating the breathtaking views, it is also a journey into the heart of Akamba culture and their ancient origins. As you ascend the winding paths during the nearly four-hour climb, the panoramic vista unfolds, revealing the majestic Nzaui Forest sprawling below, crisscrossed by seasonal rivers, and the undulating hilly terrain that paints the landscape. However, an unexpected delight awaits at the summit—a colossal boulder that serves as the stage for the age-old creation story of the Akamba people, the custodians of Makueni and neighbouring counties. It is here, at the pinnacle of Nzaui Hills, that the tale of the Akamba community’s genesis comes to life. 

Footprints of First Man 

According to the Akamba creation myth, their god, Mulungu, crafted the first man and woman and placed them atop of Nzaui along with their cattle. Today, the footprints of this celestial couple, as well as those of their livestock, can still be seen on the surface of this revered rock. For believers and curious visitors alike, the hike to these imprints is a pilgrimage of sorts.

Mulungu’s divine narrative continued as a great rainfall summoned another couple from the earth. A man and woman emerged from the anthills in the surrounding area. The celestial couple, originating from heaven, only had sons, while the anthill couple had solely daughters. The ensuing intermarriages led to the formation of a prosperous family and increased cattle holdings. Yet, in their abundance, they forgot to express gratitude to their creator, Mulungu. 

The Famine & Dispersal 

In response, Mulungu cast a great famine upon the community as punishment, prompting them to scatter in search of sustenance. This dispersal, a consequence of their forgetfulness, marked a pivotal chapter in Akamba history, shaping their culture and economic activities.  

The Akamba creation myth sheds light on the versatility of Ukambani, the region encompassing Nzaui and its fertile environs. While Nzaui thrives agriculturally, supporting the growth of crops with its ample rainfall, other parts of Kamba settlement are arid, leading communities to focus on livestock rearing and trade. This adaptability, born from the dispersion caused by the great famine, manifests in the diverse livelihoods and practices of the Akamba people.
