The Laikipia Plateau

Nana looks down at her games kit and wonders what to choose. She needs to pick between the running and the football teams. She cannot do both.

“What’s up, Nana? Anita asks, coming closer.

She starts to speak but an aircraft flies overhead loudly.

“I need to choose a sport between football and running.” She says

“Aaaaah choices, choices, how to pick one,” Anita says understandingly.

Nana picks up her kit and walks over to the changing stalls while she mulls over which sport she should pick. Anita, trying to be helpful, tells her of a time she had to make a choice.

“Over the holidays, my family and I went to Laikipia but we could not decide on which activities to do with our limited time: to visit the Thompson Falls or the Ol Pejeta Rhino Conservancy.” Anita begins.

“That must have been hard, they are both great places. ” Nana says.

“Yes, they are,” Anita responds.

“What and how did you choose?” Nana asks.

“We chose Ol Pejeta, the only two known white rhinoceroses are there and we did not want to miss the opportunity to see them just in case they died from sickness or old age. Thompson Falls will always be there.” Anita responds.

“Hmmm, that was great thinking. I am thinking I should choose football because I get to run in the game too, you know killing two birds with one stone,” Nana says with a wink.

Anita laughed, winking back in agreement.

WHIRRRRRRR!!!!!

Another aircraft flew over again.

“What’s with all the planes today? Nana asks.

“They are going to the Kenya Air Force base in Nanyuki,” Anita responds.

The girls walk over to the sports field where there is a football game underway. They ask to join and are instructed by the coach that they can join the next game.

They sit on the sidelines.

As they wait they continue with their Laikipia discussion.

“Did you know that because the earth rotates on its axis, water drains in a clockwise motion in the Northern Hemisphere, while in the  Southern Hemisphere, water drains anti-clockwise?.” Anita asks.

“Yap, it’s called the Coriolis effect,” Nana answers excitedly.

“Yes. You are so smart! Anita says.

Just then they hear the whistle blow, they are up next. They quickly jump up to join the next game.

On the way to the field, Anita shouts to Nana, “The Coriolis effect doesn’t happen in Laikipia because it’s on the equator.”

Nana nods to her friend as they run to join the next game.
