Animals of Garissa

Kipsigei was glued to the knowledge competition show on TV. 

“Once a very sleepy town, it is now the fastest growing town in Kenya. What town is this?” A show presenter asked a group of children participants. 

Just then, the electricity went out before Kipsigei could hear the answer. 

“Arrrggghhhh come on! Kipsigei shouts in frustration. 

His mother who overheard the question walks in saying, “It’s Garissa.” 

“Why?” Kipsigei asks puzzled 

“Their livestock market which includes camels, goats and cattle is really big and they attract customers all the way from Somalia.” She says as she starts knitting. 

“It’s the largest in East Africa selling more than 5000 cattle per day!” she continues. 

“It is not only the livestock Garissa is known for. I can tell you much more about the wild animals too,” says mother.  

“Our county hosts the Bour-Algi Giraffe Sanctuary which the local community started to give a home to the ever-graceful Gerenuk – the giraffe antelope.” Mother says. 

“Oooh I remember what our teacher said about the other interesting places that our county has to offer to curious tourists,” Kipsigei says, his eyes lighting up. 

“The Hirola antelope, which is an endangered animal, can be sighted at the Boni National Reserve, another of our important tourist spots.” 

“See, we have so much to offer, and everyone is welcome to our county.” Mother adds as I nod in agreement.  

Just then the electricity comes back on and Kipsigei turns on the TV.
