No Head

Despite the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are positive things that have come forth. Around the world, there’s been a growing interest in podcasts and a number of noteworthy podcasts that have emerged to share timely and encouraging information. In the Kenyan context, the No Head Podcast by Dorothy Ooko falls under this category. 

As a Communications Specialist and Mindfulness Coach, Dorothy’s work involves a lot of travel. However, with the pandemic and several travel restrictions that soon followed, she finally found some down time, which allowed her to reflect on the uncertainty of the human existence and the vulnerability of human life. In these reflections, and in more questions that came to mind, she started the podcast that had already been on her to-do list.  

No Head is about living life in the present moment, navigating life and telling African stories. 

The term ‘No Head’ is interesting in a sense and it makes the mind imagine a person without a head. It also makes one think about the inspiration behind it.

“The head is host to all our thoughts, our concerns, our biases, fears & insecurities that invariably get in the way of our being fully present to life. This podcast is named so to awaken our real identity, our true authentic unadulterated uncontaminated identity – that identity which is our true self. That identity which leaves our assumptions, our judgments, our biases behind and allows us to tune in more deeply into the present, to avoid getting lost in our thoughts about the past or the future and helps us stay in touch with our experiences as they unfold moment by moment,” says Dorothy. 

No Head’s first episode was released in March 2020, and there have since been an additional 51 episodes. Of all these, the episodes on Childhood Trauma and Addiction (Part 1 and Part 2) have resonated with a number of listeners. And presently, more episodes are in production.
