Faith Linyonyi tells us about her favourite #KeRead – an urban fiction by Iman Verjee
Who Will Catch Us As We Fall is a story that shows the lives of a few Kenyans within the political context of national elections. Given their social backgrounds and personalities, we get to see the battles they choose to fight and the misfortunes they encounter along the way.
It’s always a super proud moment for me to see Kenyan places and Kiswahili/Sheng words in books. I remember after reading the book I went to Westlands just to ‘experience’ it and it felt like I could literally see the characters seated somewhere on a date or in their cars driving to town. It made me look at Kenya differently.
I also love reading literature about Kenyans of Asian descent and how the happenings of the country affect their lives.
Who Will Catch Us As We Fall is a well written story that is told with the simplest of languages. The writer builds each character from one point of their life until the reader feels like they can identify personally with the dilemmas they are faced with in life. From corruption to the urge to get up and be involved in activism in their own little way. The Kenyan life, especially the reaction towards the political environment is well depicted.
Even the love stories in the book made me want to read more because they were quite unusual. It’s a book that makes us come to terms with the complications of life. And as the book title says, if all we have is tied and twisted in imperfections, what will we cling onto when it all comes tumbling down?
