Erastus Hinga shares his review on Tracking the Scent of my Mother by Muthoni Garland.
The story is set in rural central Kenya with the protagonist being a girl who seeks revenge on her family after the destruction of her innocence. I resonated with this story primarily because it was set in the area I grew up in, which lent a familiarity to certain scenes. Funny enough, the social political problems discussed in the book are still prevalent to date. It is sad that our people are still struggling with failed cash crop farming and toxic masculinity. Muthoni Garland tells a profound story that will captivate any reader around the world.
Tracking the Scent of my Mother is a novella that may consume you long enough to finish it in one sitting but its effects will stay with you for a long time. That’s how you know a book is good. It will make you look around and wonder what else you could be missing. Once you pick it up, you will be surprised at how much you have been ignoring the struggles of others, especially women. The book was shocking as much as it was entertaining.
