Many of Nairobi’s current street names were named after individuals who moved mountains during the road to Kenya’s independence. KANU was one of Kenya’s most active political party’s and among its members was a man who served as Kenya’s first minister for Finance as well as Defence. St. Austin’s Road was originally named for the catholic church built in 1913 by the Holy Ghost fathers. It was one of the churches earliest parishes in Kenya and it sits in St Mary’s school. This was the main road that linked one of the capitals’ early suburbs – Lavington, to Westlands and was later renamed for this civil servant and political stalwart – James Gichuru.
