In the wake of protests that took place on March 16th 1922, Africans staged a second protest at the far end of Government Road demanding the release of their leader. A large number of women were amongst the thousands of people that gathered outside the Nairobi Police Station, and before long panic set in amidst the British officers.
That day, 25 Kenyans died in gunfire on the road between the police station and the Norfolk Hotel.

The independent Kenya government honored Harry Thuku by naming the street where the confrontation took place after and in honor of him. The road was previously Ainsworth Causeway
