The victories of the Iteso on the battlefield were owed to their undisputable combat skills. Time and time again, they emerged triumphant over the neighbouring Ababukusu, Abagishu, Sabaot, and Karamajong. Every army needs a secret weapon, and while the fighting skills of the Iteso were unmatched, they always had an ace up their sleeve. This was none other than Among’in: magical diviner and wife of Oduk, the great field marshal.
So great were Among’in’s powers that prophets and warriors from other communities traversed great distances to seek her counsel. The legend of her abilities was told far and wide, and the fate of everyone who consulted with her was sealed with a successful endeavour.
It is said that Ajeet, the greatest female warrior of Ngariam, located in present day Uganda sought counsel from her. Using her prophecies she defended her people from Karamajong warriors.
Another warrior who benefitted from consulting Among’in was Okuko Oguti from the Tororo area. Using her advice, he implemented a war strategy which saw him prevail over the Luo-Padhola and Ababukusu.
Using her mystical powers, she foresaw the coming of the Europeans and used this knowledge to prepare her people to resist colonial rule. Her spiritual guidance was crucial in the expansion of the Iteso territory across East Africa.
