The Somali bury the deceased on the day of death. The body is transported to the site of the funeral prayers (salat-I-janazah) where members of the family, friends and community are gathered. An Imam is present and leads the attendees in a silent prayer. Then follows the movement to the gravesite where only men are allowed to be present. The deceased is laid in the grave on his right side facing Mecca. A prayer follows.
The funeral continues with the three-day mourning period for the bereaved. This process is observed through devotion, avoidance of decorative clothing, and receiving condolences from visitors. If a woman has lost her husband, she is expected to continue mourning (iddah) for four months and ten days in accordance with the Quran. During this period, she is not to move from her home or remarry.
