Kumiliki is a familiar game but with completely homegrown flavor. It’s a game of property and money..so basically the true game of Kenyan life!
Remember Monopoly where the main objective is getting as much property as you can, selling it or keeping it and charging rent? Where you can build houses and hotels on your property? Here’s the Kenyan version! It’s a game that brings family’s together to laugh and play were one can end up owing one’s children money and be stuck in great debt to them. In Kumiliki all the money is in Kenyan shillings and the property’s are all places Nairobi such as South B, Parklands, Lavington, Kibera, Muthaiga and Kileleshwa. Amenities include Toi and Gikomba markets, while the jail of course … is Kamiti. The game truly brings out the Kenyan perspective as it has Harambee and Bahati cards which one picks up as they play the game and one may be surprised with a Presidential pardon, the news that City council has demolished all you houses and hotels, or that your stima has been cut – sound familiar?
The game is fun for kids as they feel like grown-ups and see the perks of getting money but also the downside such as getting bankrupt or losing all your property or owing everything to the bank.
It’s a game of life though, as it shows the pitfalls of greed but also teaches one not to underestimate the underdog. Traits like kindness pop up when one donates money to one’s fellow players but so does the savagery of the proverbial cutthroat dealer… player beware in this game of wits!
