In 1932, the Nairobi residents requested that a municipal market be constructed in the new town. Their request was met and a modern design market hall was structured on Stewart Street.
Although temporarily used for boxing tournaments and as a drill hall for Kenya’s defense forces, the council soon restricted the hall’s purpose to the reason for its construction. In 1937, the use of the City Market for sports and training was banned altogether.
That’s just one story from Stewart Street. Today, we know it as Muindi Mbingu Street, named after Samuel M. Mbingu. He led one of the country’s largest demonstrations from Machakos to Nairobi in the name of fighting for the rights of Kenyans.
