Ronald Ngala Street

Leading into one of the busiest sections of Nairobi Central business District was Duke Strret, so named like many of Nairobi’s early streets for English royalty. Post independence the street gained a new name – for one of Kenya’s eminent sons, who gained a teaching diploma at Makerere University, and spent his early career as a teacher before venturing into politics where he was elected to the legislative council (Legco) in 1957. As leader of the Kenya African Democratic Union, Ronald Ngala became the first African to lead Government Business and later Chief Minister in the Legco. Following Kenya’s independence, he was appointed as a Minister.
